My son refuses to sit on the potty. I could get him to sit when he was younger, for a reward like a matchbox car, or play doh. We stopped potty training because he was eliminating while washing his hands but did not have success peeing in the potty during a two month period.
He has some sensory issues and sometimes his sensory challenges change. At school they try but then he will say no or oh my god when told to try the potty. I work FT so I’m kind of at a loss as to how to approach this. I don’t want to traumatize him by forcing anything. I’m pretty certain he just has a unique perspective and I’d love to unlock how I can help him be successful and ditch pull ups during the day.
He is ok flushing his poop down the toilet and says bye bye poopoo. He’s not great at communicating but has become much better with requests and sentences lately. Occasionally he will tell me potty, poopoo and I take him but it’s too late. But it’s good he’s recognizing that feeling.
Sincerely, First Time Clueless Mom

lol you're not clueless, I got you. We want to start with getting him feeling the good vibes about the bathroom again. So this could be asking him to sit with pants on.. or sit for just 5 seconds. The first step is to decide what that neutral place is. He'll go in the bathroom, great, he'll flush the toilet.. great.. will he sit if its super fast? If so, that's your starting point. I would have him sit for an easy win.. so lets say that 10s. I'd go out and get one of this big digital timers and command strip it to the wall in front of where he sits..and I'd tell him "As soon as this goes off, you can get up.. and pick a prize from the prize bin." That could be anything.. snacks, dollar store toys..anything easy..... He gets it AFTER he completes the sit and not during. Then i would do this sit exercise organically,, every hour..every hour..whatever feels do-able.
ALSO we know our kiddos ask for things constantly throughout the day. Anytime they want something I say ok.. you want TV, first sit, then TV, Outside? First sit, then outside. And each time we sit them, I up the time 5s, I dont tell him, I just do it. This is your starting point.
Let me know your thoughts!
