Saw your recommendation below and will definitely try it.
When my daughter was in ABA full time for a year, we worked on this and saw major improvements. It’s been a year since she has had ABA and I see regression in this area.
She is currently in Special Needs 1st grade and has been eloping from teachers when walking the hall or transition to the school bus. What advise can I give to the teachers/Para regarding this.
Answer:
Thank you for your question! What I would recommend is do whatever ABA was doing one year ago because it sounded like it worked!
If you are not sure what specifically they were doing, I will give you some ideas, as well. 1. A teacher or para should be holding her hand during transitions right now since it is a safety concern. 2. They should pair hand holding with behavior specific praise (ex. I love how nicely you're walking!). See how she does with just praise. For younger kids I will sometimes also add an edible reinforcer like a goldfish or small piece of snack while they are walking appropriately. This always gets faded out once the child starts walking in the absence of elopement. Once she starts walking nicely with praise and/or edible reinforcement then they can try fading from holding hands, but should still make sure someone is within arms reach. Tell the teacher to try this for a week or two and let us know how it goes!
