Won’t sit to poop

Hello,

Joshua is now sitting in the toilet for 3 minutes while holding a chlorox wipes container in his hand consistently and his reward is the iPad or tickles. He successfully did it 3 times today. I just wanted to see if he would poop in the toilet because he was hiding and wanting to poop which is what he usually does. So I caught him and brought him to sit on the toilet but he refused to poop. He pulled up his pants and diaper, then searched for a corner to hide so he could poop. I brought him three times to the toilet and he got up each time , pulled up his pants and ran to hide. I gave up and allowed him enough time to poop. He waited for me at the door and like usual I brought him to the toilet. I guided him to clean his poop from the diaper and he flushed the toilet. It’s too early, right? He doesn’t feel comfortable to sit and poop.

Answer:

EXCELLENT WORK WITH THE SITS!!!

This is not “too early.” Hiding to poop actually tells me he is ready. He knows when he needs to go and he prefers privacy. That is leverage we can use.

What will be the elimination reward? When you're ready for the potty intensive, the diapers are going bye bye!

What you are doing well:

He’s sitting for 3 minutes with a comfort item. Beautiful. Keep the wipes container if it helps him regulate.

You are pairing sits with strong rewards. Perfect.

The plan from here. simple and consistent:

Make the bathroom the only place poop happens.
If he starts looking for a corner, calmly walk him to the bathroom. Door can be mostly closed. Lights low. You can turn your back for privacy. He can hold his wipes container. We are honoring the need for privacy, just changing the location.

Sit schedules around his natural poop time.
Track for 3 to 5 days so we know his window. Most kids go after meals. In that window use cycles: 5 minutes on the toilet. 2 minutes off in the bathroom. Repeat up to 20 to 30 minutes. Use a timer. Quiet activities only available on the toilet go in a “poop box” near the seat.

Reinforcement rules.
Jackpot for any poop that lands in the toilet. Think ten times the normal reward. First successful poop earns the elimination reward and a big party.Reserve the very best reinforcer for poop only. This keeps motivation high.

Hold the boundary. stay calm.
If he stands and pulls pants up, reset without drama. “Poop happens in the bathroom.” Guide back. If he truly cannot go, end on a success you can deliver, like a clean sit with calm body, then try again at the next mini-cycle. We are not chasing. We are leading.

Also might be good to wait an extra second or 2 before bringing him back - there is a point of no return when poop starts coming, so if you catch it right, he wont be able to suck it back in. Let me know if this is helpful.

  2. I’m not sure what you meant in this paragraph “Sit schedules around his natural poop time.

Please clarify and thank you for the other advice.
