My son loves the pool and bath, but he is constantly drinking the water. He is 4 years old and an emerging speaker. I tell him repeatedly not to drink it he still does. He is a big oral sensory seeker so I believe that is why he does it, not because he’s thirsty. He also drinks water out of his water table. He loves the water, but I don’t want him drinking pool/bath water. Any tips or suggestions? He used a chewy necklace for a while when he used to mouth toys and we had success with that, but it might be hard to use while swimming though.
Answer:
If this is true thirst, then I would make sure the child has water in cup or bottle accessible with a clear directive that is the only water you drink.
if this is attention seeking which it feels like it is to me, then I would let the child know we are going in the pool or bath, and they are not to drink the water.. if they do it one time. the bath or pool is done.
Let me know if this is helpful. I think I answered this on last weeks call.
