Potty Training

We are getting ready to start pptty training our 13 year old son. I’ve watched the modules for the potty training up to the poopy part which I will complete. We are making preparations and just need help with how long should we give him before putting him in the potty and then once on the potty how long should we have him sit? Also what do we do if he resist sitting on the potty?

Answer:

Ideally what you want to do is make the BCBA call this week and they can get you started. I will be back for my regular weekly call 1/6.

First thing you wanna make sure is that he'll sit happily 3 to 5 minutes enough for a pee or poop - if he hesitates if he cries if you have to hold him down or hover over him, then you wanna start by creating instructional control there first. create a reward system, put a meat timer that has a big digital clock that makes noise and command strip it to your bathroom wall. start with an easy win of like 30 seconds and anytime it goes off. He immediately gets a reward. I wouldn't give a high value reward for this because all we're asking him to do is sit. then anytime he asks for anything throughout the day you could say OK first we're gonna practice sitting and then you can have whatever it is that he wants.

You have to get this to 3 to 5 minutes before we can actually do a potty intensive once you get him sitting happily for 3 to 5 minutes then I can tell you the next step but let me know where you're at. Never have him sit longer than that.

Then I wound start with a 5 min on 20 mins off and see how he does. Make sure you're limiting his movements that you're both in a room attached to the bathroom.

What is the elimination reward you setup? Is it a 10 in desire ?

We hadn’t got to that. His reward would be fruit snacks kf he goes. We didn’t know how long we would have him sit and how long between the times we take him.
