Requesting to go to Bathroom

I have listened to the module on helping your child request to go to the bathroom but we are struggling. Our daughter is 95% day time potty trained but we always take her to the bathroom. She does know when we come home to go to the bathroom first and when she gets up, but during the day it is all prompted by us. She has started pulling on her pants some when she has the feeling to go but if we don’t see her doing that she has had a few accidents. She only comes to us when she has to go #2. She does still need help in the bathroom with her pants and getting up on the toilet most of the time so going to the bathroom still involves someone being with her to get the process started and finished.

Answer:

FIRST OFF!!! EXCELLENT WORK GETTING TO 95%!!! So we would want to start widen the window of you taking her and at the same time practicing as much as possible so that she can do the job independently. Throughout this whole process you want to keep the rewards coming.

Ex: If you take her every hour, change it to 1:15 for a day... then keep spacing it out every 24hrs.

If she is not verbal yet, you want to have a way for her to say she has to go. Could be a shaking fist in the air or a potty picture, or Potty on the AAC device. Make sure you are hand over hand using that now as you take her.

Anytime she asks for something, cookie, water, outside, I would practice the up and down motion of getting pants on/off in the bathroom. "Ohh you want a cookie, lets go practice pulling our pants up and down" (First you do this, then you get this).

I am working widening the time at the same time as getting her independent. Then once you widen the window enough she's going to practice feeling nature call. There might be some accidents but dont worry! This is part of feeling the urge and learning how fast to respond. Try this out and let me know if you have any questions!
