Hi, my son is 7, he is verbal but does not have back and forth communication. He can recall the events but not able to retell. How can I help him learn these skills? Need help.
Answer:
Thank you for your question! For recalling and retelling I usually have my clients start with events that have just happened and then slowly increase the time in between the event and retelling about the event. For example, if your son is brushing his teeth, as soon as he is done brushing his teeth ask him, "What did you just do?" If he cannot answer that then you can provide a prompt such as, "I brushed my ______." And practice throughout the day directly after an activity asking "What did you just do?" Once he is consistently answering your question correctly you can ask it a few minutes later to test his recall/retelling. For example, after you leave the bathroom say, "What did you do in the bathroom?" Start with simple activities in the house then you can ask about going to the store, things he did in school, etc. Practice makes perfect so do this several times per day to give him plenty of practice! Good luck!
