Bowel training

We finally have pee down and he is going to school in underwear now!!! We are struggling with poop, he does not care if he poops in his underwear, we no longer put pull ups during the day at all. I am having a hard time even figuring out when he’s going as well. He will tell me sometimes after he went but not always. I am going to buy different reinforcements (he wants a spin mop lol) my plan was to leave it out on top of the shelf in the bathroom for when the time comes but in meantime I am running out of ideas!! I will say it took a long time to get the pee down because my coparent was not very involved so I am not expecting overnight success with poop but I need help with this part!

Answer:

EXCELLENT JOB with the pee training!!! It is totally normal to get pee first because we get WAY more practice with it. With both of my kids, who weren’t daily poopers, poop took longer. Give yourself some grace while we figure this piece out.

“He does not care if he poops in his underwear.” Interesting thought… how do we MAKE him care? Who cleans the mess? What does cleanup look like? Are we accidentally making any part of cleanup fun or reinforcing?

LOVE the spin mop idea 😂. Think along those same lines. What does he REALLY want that we can reserve specifically for poop in the potty?

And now I want DATA. For the next several days, write down every poop: what time, what he was doing beforehand, when he last ate, and anything you notice right before he goes. We need to figure out his poop pattern so we can start catching him BEFORE it happens instead of after.

You got pee. We can figure this out too. ❤️

  2. I started making him help clean his underwear and he said “eww” LOL. I don’t make clean up fun but I do fear that having him help clean will just be something he accepts since cleaning is his favorite hobby!

I have the mop sitting in the bathroom so he can see it and he does want it really bad. How can I incorporate maybe the TV or tablet into this scenario too to make it an incentive as well.

I have noticed the past few days that he has pooped within the first hour or so after getting home from school so I tried to get him to sit but he was refusing and it was escalating his irritability so I backed off a bit. He does normally eat a snack in the afternoon at school. He doesn’t do anything specific before he goes and never has, usually he is just playing quietly so I don’t notice anything honestly before he goes. I also only have him every 3 days so I have to work with what time I have too.
