When I was changing my son for swimming lessons, he was slapping me and telling me to go away/I don’t care about you. He likes swimming lessons and does good job. I gave him a warning and he said he was ready to change. Should I have waited to put it on? Would that be “giving in” to the behavior?
Answer:
Thank you for your question.
When it's time to change clothes after swimming lessons, it might be helpful to create a step-by-step list of what needs to be done. This list will provide predictability and help your child understand what comes next after getting out of the pool.
An additional suggestion could also be to take general pictures of each task to help your son understand what needs to be done if writing down the steps is not an option. This will make him aware of each step and help him complete the task more effectively. You can also show him a particular reward he could earn for willingly changing after his swimming lesson. Furthermore, you can remind him before starting the task of the reward he will receive at the end of the process, which could help motivate him to start and complete the task of changing successfully.
