Next Steps

Hi Coaches. I wanted some advice on next steps regarding an ongoing issue with my son’s teacher. He is currently in a 12:1:1 kindergarten placement. Today my son’s ABA therapist and teacher got into a verbal disagreement because she stated she was going to submit a report for my son being unsafe at an unplanned fire drill. The therapist said all the kids were caught off guard because it was during recess. She stated NO ONE was being safe but teacher targeted my son. She stated she doesn’t believe the teacher has his best interest which I already felt but now I believe it’s confirmed. I was contemplating placing him in his old school (Montessori) until we find a new school for him. I’m sad and discouraged and don’t really know what to do if his ABA therapist doesn’t return. I’ve already requested a FBA and a re-evaluation to have an aid with him when his therapist isn’t there but if the teacher is not accommodating everything else is useless.

Answer:

I am sorry to hear about this! I was very excited to hear that your son's school was allowing his ABA therapist in the classroom, but the relationship needs to stay positive between the therapist and teacher for it to work. It's great to have some eyes and ears in the classroom from the ABA therapist as long as you trust them and know that they are 100% being honest. If you have a great relationship with the ABA therapist then that is great, but I would also hear out the teacher so that you hear both sides of the story. I think keeping him in public school is ideal, but if you really feel in your gut that he would do better in his old school, you know him best! Have there been any other issues prior to this? Do you think it can be resolved between the ABA therapist and teacher? If so, I would try for resolution before pulling him! Keep us updated!
