Potty Training – Q4Michelle

Hello 👋, I hope your son is feeling well.
After phone call on monday We adjusted schedule to every 30 mins and wasn’t given her as much liquid as 2 days before. She woke up on that day not willing to sit on potty. She started to hold pee when she sits on potty and then in 5-10 mins she will pee in undies. She will pee little bit in potty and then pee rest in undies. Next day she had to go to preschool and they were following our schedule of every 30 mins. 2 accidents and 2 go on potty. But she was crying on way to school and all the time there. Since we started instance potty training she is waking up at 2am and doesn’t go to sleep until 4:30-5 … and she on top of it she had first day on ABA also 2 days before.
Do I need to stop ? Looks like it’s too much for her all this on schedule going to pee. Now she is negative about potty training compared to first 2 days when we started. She figured out what’s happening and doesn’t want to do out now.
Could you please advise what should I adjust in this case ? Thanks

Answer:

Thanks for reaching out. Let’s clean up the process a bit and make some adjustments to help your daughter feel more comfortable and successful.

1. School Potty Training
We don’t potty train at school until we’re seeing at least 80% success at home. Right now, she’s adjusting to several transitions, so let’s focus on building momentum at home first. Keep her in pull-ups or diapers at school for now, and use this time to collect data and fine-tune the process.

2. Resistance to Sitting
If she’s not willing to sit, we need a reset—not a stop. Go back to practicing happy sits with a strong sit reward. Here’s how:

Find her baseline: Will she walk into the bathroom? Sit for 10 seconds? Start at the level she’s comfortable with and reward that.
Reward wisely: Make the sit reward 10x the ask but not as good as her elimination reward. Her elimination reward should be a "10 out of 10" on the desire scale—something she loves and will work for.
3. Transitions and Overwhelm
She’s dealing with a lot right now (ABA, preschool, and potty training). Let’s pull back slightly to create positive associations with the bathroom again. Practice short, happy sits, and focus on getting her used to the routine without pressure. Once things feel positive and calm, we’ll move forward again.

Let me know if I’m understanding everything correctly or if you have more questions. You’re doing great by staying proactive and reaching out. I’m here to support you every step of the way!
