What is your Priority?
One of the biggest obstacles to parents not getting Potty Training or Communication done is not about their inability to teach a child with Autism, but their DECISION to not make it a priority to get these life skills done.
Parents might say they want nothing more than a Potty Trained Communicating Child but they’ll also say it can’t happen because…
“I am working full time.”
“Work nights.”
“Single parent”
“And I have other children to care for”
“But I don’t know how”
“Can’t afford it”
“We are in the middle of a home remodel”
“Then we have a big trip coming up.”
“I’m going through a divorce.”
“There is a death in the family”
“Spouse/loved one is sick.”
“Autism makes it so I can’t teach my baby these skills.”
And I’m not trying to minimize that LIFE HAPPENS. I KNOW things will always come up, we all do.
But since you know that life will always throw curve balls, you should also know that they aren’t the reasons these goals haven’t happened yet.
The real reason your child shits their pants and tantrums for a cookie is because you’ve chosen to not make it a priority to teach them a different way.
That’s it.
So you get to own your decision to make all the other reasons the priority.
But…
Also, own that it’s the only reason your child is still in diapers and hand leading you to everything they want versus communicating. Once you make it a priority to teach your child, then things can change.
Once you are committed to no longer making it optional to use the toilet, you’ll be one step closer to a child who pees in the potty.
As soon as you are consistent in making them use the AAC device to communicate, so your child will be less likely to tantrum for what they need.
You can make it a priority to potty train or teach communication no matter your life circumstances or you can also make it a priority to find all the reasons it can’t happen.
Your baby is ready to potty train and communicate whenever you are.
What’s going to be your priority today?
