If you’re anything like the mom I spoke with yesterday, you might be thinking: “Sure, my child pees in the toilet now… but still hides to poop behind the couch.” Or “They’re only staying dry if I tell them when to go.” One of the most underestimated parts of the process of teaching your child the Autism Independence Pillars (Potty Training, Communication, and Stopping Problem Behaviors) is that…. Confidence comes from celebrating progress while continuing to move forward. It’s not complicated, but it fights against everything your worried parent brain wants to focus on. What victory are you diminishing TODAY? What progress are you overlooking because it’s not “perfect” yet? Stop that. Stop waiting for complete mastery before acknowledging success. Find pride in each small step toward independence. You don’t need to achieve everything at once to be moving in the right direction. Then… trust your experience so far. What’s worked for pee training? What patterns have you noticed? What strategies could you adapt for the next phase? Commit to building on what’s working – not starting over. Yes, seek guidance when stuck. But never use “it’s not enough yet” as a reason to discount progress. In the moment, partial success IS success. Moving forward beats waiting for perfection. Remember that. Then TEST your next steps. Try new approaches. You CAN’T get RESULTS without testing. You need those results to EVALUATE. What’s helping? What’s causing resistance? What could you adjust? Now you have a direction for tomorrow. This is how we build complete independence – one capability at a time. It’s the same process whether mastering toileting, expanding communication, or managing behaviors. This journey builds your confidence. It builds your child’s skills. It gives you both EXPERIENCE. You can do this, one step at a time. Xo Michelle P.S. If you can’t stop yourself from shitcanning your progress, this is what my group coaching program is all about.
